Are french fries gluten free?

It depends.

If the fries are commercially made and flash frozen, then they may have been (more likely have been) dusted with flour to keep them from sticking to each other. Plus, many fast food places now add a coating to their fries to make even more crispy and crunchy, and guess what that coating is made from?

If you must have fries, then fresh cut are better than frozen, but the high heat deep frying of said fries is still not a healthy option.  Most oils that are suited for high heat use turn into a trans-fat and we know that isn’t good for us.
